Martha Stoumen Post Flirtation Red: A Natural Wine that Drinks as Easy as Vinyl Plays

The Martha Stoumen Post Flirtation Red is a natural red wine with big, juicy flavors of pomegranate, orange peel, and hibiscus agua fresca. This glou glou wine drinks as easy as your favorite record spins.

Before getting into the tasting notes for Martha Stoumen’s Post Flirtation Red Wine, I just need to get this on the table: I’m a little obsessed with Martha’s credo of organically farmed grapes, with little human interference.

Who is Martha Stoumen?

Martha Stoumen is a California winemaker totally at ease letting nature do its thing, and trusting the quality of her vineyards, and the natural winemaking process. I’m of the mind that nature knows best; these days I lean more analog than modern: record players, paper newspapers. You get the idea. So, I really respect this approach.

If you’re interested in the natural wine movement, beyond clever marketing in glossy magazines, and filter-heavy Instagram accounts, take a look at her blog. Her Working with Nature posts are on-point.

Before we get into Martha’s Post Flirtation Red Wine, don’t forget that she also makes a Nero d’Avola Rosato, and a number of mouthwatering white wines like Out of the Meadow, which is a field blend of 66% Chenin blanc, 16% Vermentino, 11% Trousseau gris, 5% Green Hungarian, 2% Chasselas Doré, and Post Flirtation White, a blend of 36% Marsanne, 34% Roussanne, 16% Vermentino, 14% Muscat blanc.

The Out of the Meadow wine is a Stoumen Wine Club exclusive.

A Crushable Glou Glou Wine with a Juicy Palate

The Post Flirtation red wine is a California glou-glou style wine made from 54% Carignan, 46% Zinfandel. You’ll notice juicy pomegranate, orange peel, and hibiscus agua fresca.

The Carignan Stroumen uses is old vine, and was planted in 1948. 1948 is the same year Rick James, Kenny Loggins, Alice Cooper, James Taylor, Stevie Nicks, and Steven Tyler were born. Post Flirtation Red has more of a Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around vibe, than a funky Superfreak vibe.

The Carignan brings a savory element. As personified by Nicks, it seems to say,

“Baby, you’ll come knockin’ on my front door

Same old line you used to use before

And I said yeah, well, what am I supposed to do?

I didn’t know what I was gettin’ into”

But the Zinfandel brings a sweet, spiciness: think cinnamon and cloves. As Petty, it balances with:

“I know you really wanna tell me goodbye

I know you really wanna be your own girl”

Post Flirtation indeed…

What to Pair with Martha Stoumen Post Flirtation Red

Martha recommends pairing the Post Flirtation Red with any and every kind of taco, and “lamb kebabs with crushed tomatoes over saffron rice, BBQ chicken with pomegranate molasses, and labneh with fresh herbs.”

I enjoyed the bottle with a charcuterie plate, but one could image it being pretty spectacular on its own, especially if you’re kicking back on the porch on a summer day.

Where to Buy Martha Stoumen Wines

Martha’s California wine is made in Sebastopol in the Pax wine facility, along with Jolie-Laide, and Monte Rio Cellars.

The best place to buy wines is always directly from the winemaker. Martha Stoumen has a great wine club with lots of perks like:

  • Tickets to parties and wine events (who doesn’t love a good party?!)
  • Priority access to special releases
  • Limited edition artwork

Don’t feel like committing? You can find Martha’s wine at these purveyors.

Martha Stoumen wines are totally worth adding to your rotation of low intervention California wines. And, with label names like ‘ Martha Stoumen Honeymoon’, ‘Post Flirtation’, and ‘Out in the Meadow’, there’s just something a little more relaxed about these wines.
